Public safety record
Swami Rama (1970s–1993): On 4 September 1997 a US federal jury (M.D. Pa., Patel v. Himalayan International Institute) awarded US$275,000 compensatory and US$1.6 million punitive damages against the Himalayan Institute, finding that its founder Swami Rama had sexual relations with a 19-year-old student by abusing his position as her guru, and that the Institute was negligent in allowing him to be a sexual predator for years. The court upheld the verdict in December 1999. Yoga Journal had reported allegations by several women in 1990. Patel v.
